Technological Core Values

  • Open Source - the whole technology life cycle should be open sourced - from research and development and design through parts sourcing, fabrication (videos, CAD, technical drawings, exploded view drawings, simulations and tests), use, maintain and repair, to reuse and recycle. This transparency and open licensing allows everyone to know, replicate, adapt, distribute, build upon and improve the technologies. Through open sourcing the technology life cycle and continually improving it according to the other core values we can make it fully sustainable.
  • Replicability - the use of widely available natural and processed resources, standardized components and easily accessible fabrication tools enables the replication of the technologies. The goal is as many people as possible to be able to replicate the technologies. Easy Replicability is the true meaning of Open Source Technology.
  • Modularity - the technology consists of smaller parts called modules (LEGO-like) which can be created, tested, fixed and improved separately and in parallel. Modules are easier to understand, monitor, maintain and interchange between different technologies. This increases the production speed and reliability of the technology and saves costs and resources. A modular technology is adaptive to new innovations, different customer demands and fields of application and creates a shared know-how.
  • Scalability - is the ability to easily scale an important factor of the technology, for example its size, power, throughput or accuracy. Scalability makes the technology adaptive to different demands.
  • DIY - we aim to empower the average individual to build the technologies themselves through open source rapid learning materials and hands-on workshops.
  • Design for Manufacturability - designing for easy fabrication and assembly is beneficial for the whole technology life cycle. It assures lower costs and better quality, reliability, automation and user serviceability. Combined with Open Source and Replicability its importance spans the organizations and companies involved directly and indirectly in development and use of the technologies.
  • Safety - people should be able to safely fabricate and use the technologies.
  • Low-Cost - optimal use of available resources, collective financing and all other technological values reduce the usual costs and the product price. Simplicity and Modularity enable shared costs between different technologies resulting in drastic holistic cost reduction. Open Hardware is on average two to three times cheaper than the proprietary equivalents.
  • Ecological Design - the goal of the technology is to serve the human needs and provide environmental regeneration.
