Diskussion:Boonex
In General
Nearly all "disadvantages" of the evaluation belong to the fact whats currently configured in the Boonex installation. The evaluation doesn't cover whats possible in Boonex, it only covers what was configured by me in a small amount of time. Most of the "disadvantages" are configurable features and could be simply en/disabled by some clicks.
The Wordpress system named in the Comments section is a blog system. This is a completely different type of software system than Boonex. Boonex is a system for social interaction of many people to communicate and interact.
Wordpress is a software system to provide a single blog / website for a web presentation to inform people about whats going on.
collab.opensourceecology.de has the goal to provide better collaboration (Boonex system for _intern_ collaboration) blog.opensourceecology.de (linked to www.opensourceecology.de when it's ready) has to goal to represent OSE Germany to the outside. (Wordpress system)
Forum
The Boonex forum software can be replaced by phpBB 3 - which is the standard and most commonly used open source php forum software. php BB is more freature-rich but woudn't integrate so smooth with Boonex. I don't think that we need that much RSS features for the first time. Replacing the default forum software of Boonex by php BB 3 is common in Boonex installations anyway.
Boonex disadvantages in detail
no Preview button. -> preview button can be found in the editor as an icon (2nd toolbar, right hand side)
Cannot embed youtube videos: -> Youtube videos can be embedded by a simple link. For my understanding this is not needed for a project blog where the content mainly comes from the project members, not from youtube.
iframe code is filtered out -> this is a security feature but you can use the HTML mode, can be found in the editor too.
no image file upload -> You can attach files by uploading them (below the text input field, above the submit button)
Blog
All disadvantages named here are config options in the admin interface. Obsolete.
Videos
Youtube streaming is configurable / can be activated by plugin.
Poll
Re-voting can be disabled by a config option / replacing the poll module by an other plugin.
Chat
Can be easily replaced by an other chat module which has an history.
Conclusion
I think we shouldn't focus on software details - which is for my understanding - not productive. In addition I wouldn't suggest to evaluate a highly configurable social network system from a user point of view. (Who isn't able to know all the config options available in the software) All disadvantages named here are obsolete at all because it's customizable in a small amount of time.
A better and more positive approach would be to create a wish list - for my understanding.
My vision is that we have one system for collaboration, where every project / member has a personal blog and the people are interconnected and can communicate in real time and that we have _an additional_ system where we represent our organization to the outside (the official blog).
A collab system gives us huge advantages a single blog system would never be able to provide. Sadly I doesn't had more time to present the advantages/features of Boonex. So the idea of having a collab system could be misunderstood.
In my toughts collab is our project hub / mission log tool. All OSE members can use this tool to organize their work, discuss, vote and collaborate. It a tool for intern use. For better project and member interaction.
The blog system should be our official website. Members of OSE can publish official posts there. E.g. a summary of activities happend in the last week and documented on collab in the serveral blogs of the serveral members. For this approach Wordpress is the best software.
For building a social network, Wordpress doesn't provide the needed features.
